Deep in the depths of the Jarsath’s Wastes dungeon Charasis: The Emperor’s Athenaeum there is a gentleman of questionable honor who goes by the nickname of Cut-Me-Own-Tail Ssstibbler. He offers to supply food and drink to adventurers who have found their way into the deeper parts of the zone and if you have the cash, you can purchase his book of tasty recipes not previously seen on Norrath.

His family recipe book, Culinary Secrets of the Ssstibbler Clan, is not cheap: Cut-Me-Own-Tail Ssstibbler wants 10 platinum coins to part with his tatty little book and he doesn’t offer credit. However, the book does include tasty drinks and dishes that you can not find anywhere else. Although it is in the depths of the dangerous Charasis West arena, there are many adventurers who have traveled the depths and purchased the book in hopes of finding a connoisseur of fine foods to sell it on to. If you don’t wish to fight your way through The Emperor’s Athenaeum, then speak to your local broker who may be able to put you in touch with an adventurer holding this rare volume for resale.

There are two types of recipe in the book: common recipes and a special selection of no-trade recipes that can be made in bulk. The recipe book requires level 75 Provisioner to scribe. The recipes themselves are level 80 Provisioner.

For Your Nearest and Dearest

There are two recipes which can be made in bulk. The food and drink are not tradeable and cannot be commissioned. They are marked as HEIRLOOM which means that you can place the food and drink into your shared bank to share with other characters on the same account. This fast and easy food is meant to allow provisioners to quickly supply their alts with food and drink. They do not have any stats and are simply meant as <s>junk food</s> convenience meals to keep out-of-combat regeneration high, which minimises downtime.

Each pristine combine creates a stack of 20.

Dubious Delights

The remaining recipes in the book will be somewhat familiar to fans of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series (if you haven’t read it, shame on you and go by a copy of the The Color of Magic immediately!). These are just-for-fun recipes and do not offer stats or any particular benefit over standard food. However, I have to admit the descriptions brought a smile to my face.

The food is created two at a time for pristine combines. They increase your max power and raise your health regeneration level out of combat which can help to reduce downtime.

These daily missions, optimised towards crafter groups representing all three professions, require The Shadow Odyssey expansion and you’ll need to be at least tradeskill level 50. You can earn faction and tokens to buy outfits, mounts and recipe scrolls. The missions end with a treasure chest which drop Void Shard recipe books, jewelry with tradeskill bonuses and even a rolling pin!

We’ve been putting together guides with all the information you need to take advantage of the opportunities created by the Far Seas Trading Company and here they are, collected in a single post for you to quickly find the information you need.

Quick Start Guide for Crafting Missions

A quick and simple step-by-step guide to the initial questline, helping you to get faction fast in order to take part in the missions. You must have the Moors of Ykesha expansion to do the Far Seas Crafting Missions.

Tradeskill Missions Made Easy

Everything you wanted to know about Far Seas tradeskill missions but were afraid to ask: Where to go, who to speak to, where the missions are. If you are just starting out and not sure what to do, this introduction is for you.

New Tradeskill Mission in the Void

This tradeskill instance is slightly different from the others but one thing remains the same: things are going wrong and you need to help! The portal connecting the Void to Norrath has been destroyed and tradeskillers are needed to pitch in and fix it.

10 Tips for Optimizing Crafting Missions

Treasure chest drops are optimized for missions completed in under an hour but it’s not always possible to get together with a strong group of tradefolk to work together. Luckily, these missions can still be completed even if you are missing professions. You can even do them solo if you just can’t seem to find anyone to join you and you are willing to put in extra time.

Far Seas Mission Recipes

Far Seas Faction Merchant

You receive Far Seas Trading Company Tokens as a reward for completing missions. The Far Seas Merchant will gladly accept these tokens in return for one-of-a-kind merchandise – if you have the faction. This is a list of all the goods he has on offer.

Adventurers have daily missions available to them in new dungeons and these missions have Void Shards as rewards. The Void Shards can be used to purchase armor and jewelry from merchants in the Moors of Ykesha but there’s a cheaper way.

Far Seas Tradeskill Missions have recipe books that have a chance of dropping from the final chest of the mission instance. These recipe books are not the same as the faction recipes for sale by the Far Seas Faction Merchant. The books are scribable by all tradeskill classes at tradeskill level 70 and offer level 79 recipes to craft the adventurer items using fewer Void Shards. Thus, there is a great incentive for adventurers to have their items crafted rather than to purchase them from the merchants.

A warning from the Denmother:

You must finish these items to pristine in order to receive the items. You must finish them to at least crude to have the void shards returned (and the base armor, when making greater pieces). If you cancel before the completion of the crude progress bar you will lose your void shards! Don’t cancel before you hit crude, even if you find out you’re making the wrong item for the customer. Finish the crude bar, then cancel, if you have to stop the creation process, or you will lose the customer’s void shards and have a VERY unhappy customer on your hands.

The Base Void Shard Armor and all Void Shard Jewelry is crafted using T8 harvests and Void Shards.

The Advanced Void Shard Armor requires the appropriate Base Void Shard Armor as well as additional Void Shards. The base Void Shard Armor must be unequipped in order to commission the items.

Crafted Base Void Shard Armor

Far Seas Strategic Pricing Manual Volume 1 contains the base armor sets. The crafted armor pieces use one fewer Void Shard than the purchased versions. The items can be inspected at a mysterious Quellthulian Shard Armor Merchant at 1683,452,894 at the Dropship Landing area of the Moors of Ykesha.

Crafted Base Void Shard Jewelry

Far Seas Strategic Pricing Manual Volume 2 contains the basic jewelry. The crafted jewelry pieces use one fewer Void Shard than the purchased versions. The items can be inspected at a mysterious Quellthulian Shard Jewelry Merchant at 1681,452,897

All base jewelry items cost 5 Void Shards to craft.

Crafted Infused Void Shard Jewelry and Miscellanea

Far Seas Strategic Pricing Manual Volume 3 contains the advanced (infused) jewelry and the miscellaneous items that do not fit into the other categories. The crafted items use two fewer Void Shards than the purchased versions.
The jewelry items can be inspected at a mysterious Quellthulian Infused Shard Jewelry Merchant at 1678,452,895 at the Dropship Landing area of the Moors of Ykesha.

The jewelry comes in sets of three and include a set bonus if you have all of the items. All infused jewelry items cost 13 Void Shards to craft.

These items include weapons, shields, baubles and symbols and each cost 18 Void Shards to craft.

Items for the secondary, ranged and charm slots can be viewed at a mysterious Quellthulian Shard Miscellanea Merchant at 1680,452,890 at the Dropship Landing area of the Moors of Ykesha.

Note: mount whistles for a 65% runspeed bear are also classed as Miscellanea and cost 50 shards at the Quellthulian merchant. These are not included in the recipe book and can not be crafted.

Crafted Greater Shard Armor

Far Seas Strategic Pricing Manual Volume 4 contains the recipes for Greater Shard Armor. Crafters use two to three fewer Void Shards to create these items. These recipes require a base void shard armor piece as well as Void Shards to be created.

This advanced armor can be inspected at a mysterious Quellthulian Greater Shard Armor Merchant at 1675,452,895 at the Dropship Landing area of the Moors of Ykesha.

The Far Seas Tradeskill Missions involve creating nine different items in sets of twelve. Each of these items is from a different tradeskill class.

The most efficient route is to take the quest and create the twelve items requiring your primary skill. When you hand in the quest, you will receive credit for all twelve items at once.

Once everyone in the group has created their primary items, you should focus on creating items coming from your profession (Craftsman, Outfitter or Scholar). Each crafting skill is capped but the cap for those skills in your own profession is higher than that of the other professions. You can also purchase a Cloak of the Far Seas for your profession from the Far Seas Faction Merchant once you have 30,000 faction, further improving your abilities within your profession.

Here is the entire set of mission recipes by class so that you can quickly see which recipes you will have the most success with (theoretically).

Exotic Dishes of Kunark

The exotic dishes of Kunark are quite the rage in Qeynos: the salty and tangy flavors of these foreign dishes transporting the adventurer back to the wild lands to relive the excitement of travel, the sound of the waves crashing and the wafting scent of succulent petals.

You can get Succulent Brutemarrow Infusion and Spiced Hornet Legs on every street corner but the most divine seafood cuisine of the Sathirians is still not available in the city: the refreshingly sharp-flavored Magma Fish dishes.

Magma Fish Reduction, tender fish fried quickly with smoldering material to make a spicy and succulent morsel, brings a warmth to the body and soul so focused, it’s as if you have an aura of heat around you.

Fiery Magma Infusion, a simple broth which is traditionally drunk like a hot tea, wakes up the mind and enhances perception, so much so that adventurers swear they are able to do more damage while the infusion digests.

Although common folk complain that they feel hungry again half an hour after eating, gastronomy tours have been sold out with connoisseurs captivated by the exciting flavors and the feeling of well-being associated with this uncommon fish, even if for only a short while. Adventurers swear on a small meal of Fiery Magma Reduction followed by a swift shot of Fiery Infusion for the ultimate fighting experience.

In Search of a Recipe

We traveled to Jarsath Wastes to find out the history of this dish and whether it was possible to recreate it at home.

Our journey started in Danak Shipyard where we spoke to the Quarter Master, Eviss Ryiss. He said that there had been a recent translation of the classic recipe book, Sathirian Magma Recipes, and he was more than happy to sell it to friends (amiable faction with Danak Shipyard) for just under 11 gold. The book contains detailed instructions for both the reduction and the infusion but although the ingredients seem basic, the recipes are not and should only be attempted by for skilled provisioners.

The interesting thing about these recipes is that they use an ingredient not used in any other tradeskill recipe and which were not available on the Sathirian market. The recipes require:

Magma Fish

Smoldering Material

Redwood Kindle

Smoldering Material are an uncommon harvest from T8 nodes with the unfortunate exception of fishing nodes. Magma Fish are found in special fishing nodes in Skyfire (the northeast area of Jarsath Wastes) and you must be wielding a Collapsible Fishing Pole in order to see the little fish, hiding out in the lava craters. You do not have to be a provisioner to catch the fish.

Magma Fishing

In order to find the elusive Magma Fish, you will need to get your hands on a Collapsible Fishing Pole.

The fishing rod’s description only gives a hint as to its function:

This sturdy metal fishing pole looks as if it could withstand great temperatures to catch unusually dangerous fish.

The Collapsible Fishing Pole is tinker-made and requires five incarnadine clusters to make (three are returned on a successful combine). The rod is tradeable until it is attuned so you may be able to purchase one directly from the broker. If not, you will need a tinker with skill level 395 to create it for you.

The resulting rod requires level 80 to equip but this can be either adventurer or tradeskill. Even with the fishing rod, you will need to be a fairly adept fisherman to collect the fish, even with the 35 skill bonus achieved by equipping the the rod. You do not need to have maxed the skill but it certainly needs to be close. In addition to the skill bonus, equipping the rod reduces your harvest time by 2.5 seconds and gives you the ability to see the molten schools of fish in the lava.

Note for pure tradeskillers: Although there is no minimum adventure level required to equip the fishing rod, the nodes are only to be found in the Skyfire area of Jarsath Wastes which is exceedingly dangerous to reach as a low-level explorer. Assuming you manage to survive the journey, you will find that your options are limited due to the lava damage and the magmatic destroyers who hide in the lava ready to melt down the unwary.

Now that you have your fishing pole, you should be looking to get your heat resists increased in order to maximise the time you can spend in the lava. Use our list of easy to get heat resist gear to give you a helping hand.

BEWARE! Many of the lava pools which hold the molten schools of fish are also the home of magmatic destroyers. They hide invisibly within the pools and emerge when an unwary adventurer touches the lava. However, once you have vanquished the destroyer from his pool, you will find the area safe from others for 20 minutes, in which time you can catch your fish in peace. Also, you can find molten schools in the lava canal near the Sel Nok camp which is not deep enough to hide the magmatic destroyers.

One you have caught your Magma Fish and collected smoldering material (no trivial task in itself), you have everything you need to try these delectable Sathirian dishes.

Bon Appétit!

Harvesting has come gained new popularity with the Signature quest A Gathering Obsession which starts in the Village of Shin.

This quest can now be started at level 5, so you can update the quest while you are gaining tradeskill experience. Your progression of the quest is limited by your level cap: as you increase in level and thus would be able to gain the skills required to harvest in the next tier, you will be able to take the next stage of the quest. Note that you will receive the quests whether or not you have the individual skills required to harvest the nodes.

Qho Augren, swimming in a pond at -27,10,-108 wants you to collect harvested materials for him to inspect – but not just any harvested item will do. You need to have very specific items from the right tier and in some instances from a specific zone which you must harvest yourself, in the order that he wants them, for a total of eight harvesting runs.

Luckily, I’ve already collected a number of resources on MMORPG-Info to make this a bit less painful.

First: make sure that you are using the best tools to speed up your harvesting ability by looking at our Harvesting Tools Reference. As level 70 is required by the quest, you should be at least have Sandalwood Tools made by woodworkers (reduces harvest time by 2.0 seconds). If your artisan level is 66 or above, you should be using Overclocked Tools made by Tinkers (reduces harvest time by 2.5 seconds and a bonus to skills).

Harvesting by Zone tells you exactly which zones you need to be in (and in some cases, which part of the zone) for every tier of harvests.

If you want the details of the harvests he wants, take a look at our tables of Harvested Materials, which lists all the standard harvests along with what type of node and what tier it is found in. I use this all the time to work out which rares I need for my alts needing upgrades.

Note that you should NOT take the harvesting quests from Duggin on Thundering Steppes docks for any zone in which you are harvesting for Qho Augren. Duggin’s quests will take credit for your materials first and you will not receive the updates for A Gathering Obsession until the Duggin quest has completed.

The reward is a gorgeous cloak with bonuses to harvesting skills which would have made completing this quest a lot easier!

Tradeskilling is becoming an increasingly broad part of playing Everquest, with quests and Epic rewards.

How do you get started? The first step is to become an artisan. Hailing people around the tradeskill areas will generally do the trick but if you want to be sure, find someone with a title of Crafting Trainer. They will start you off as a level two artisan with a copy of Artisan Essentials Volume 2.

Then you should speak to a tradeskill delegate and get started on the tutorial. It’s not only a useful primer in crafting, it also awards large amounts of experience for very little effort! The delegates have a title of “Tradeskill Tutorial” to make sure that you can’t miss them.

Take a look at the Ultimate Tradeskill Tutorial Tutorial for everything you need to know to get to level 10 in record time.

At level 9 and level 19, you will have to speak to a Crafting Trainer to progress your craft by choosing a specialization.

If you change your mind about a specialization, you should speak to a Tradeskill Career Counsellor who will reset you to Artisan level 9. This means you lose all levels and the recipes you gained after level 9 in order to allow you to choose new specializations. You can then go directly to a Crafting Trainer who will give you level 10 in the profession of your choice.

Details for these NPCs in the tradeskill areas is listed per starting city:

Tradeskilling has vitality for bonus experience, just like adventuring does. A new character is created with zero vitality. As a result, you should wait a day or two before starting your tradeskill to build up vitality. This will give you double experience for every combine.

First: claim your free bag by typing /claim and choosing the Veteran Reward Pack – 1 day. This will give you a Bag of Endless Adventure with 12 slots. You get one reward for every new character. I would recommend against using the potions that give a bonus to experience at low levels: you will find these much more useful at the high end when things get slow.

Second: speak to a tradeskill delegate. They tend to hang around in tradeskill areas and you can always ask a guard to show you to “Tutorial” and he should point you straight to one.

Freeport: speak to Vissa D’Dbth. She is in West Freeport on the South side of the tradeskilling building at 31,19,111

Gorowyn: speak to Rozokal Niba’mok. She is located at 2744,123,1130 in The Wards

Kelethin: speak to Ikile Harmonia. She is standing outside of Tunare’s Pages at 468,93,333

Neriak: speak to Szinjss X’Vemtor. He can be found at -174,-0,302 in the Neriak Down Below

Qeynos: speak to Jason Merrytoe. He is in North Qeynos at 342,-21,-95

The village tradeskill instances in Freeport and Qeynos also have tradeskill delegates. You can do the tutorial in any starter village by using the instance.

Harvesting

The initial quest, Tutorial: Learning to Harvest, is optional. However, it will reward you with a meager harvesting bag (10 slots, carries unrefined tradeskill components) which may be useful to new characters.

You’ll be asked to collect:

10 severed elm

10 roots

10 tin

5 lead

3 fish

2 jumjum

5 pelts

Previously harvested items will not count. You will not get credit for broker purchases. If you do not want to go out harvesting then you should skip this optional quest. However, if you don’t have the raw resources for starting crafting and you need to get your various harvesting skills up to 20 anyway, you may as well take the quest and get the bag.

Note that this is not what you will need for completing the tutorial; see the shopping list at the bottom of this post. However, clearing nodes should mean you harvest the necessary loam and malachite in addition to these items so once you’ve completed this quest, you should only need to purchase the fuel items needed from the wholesaler.

Learning to Craft

The tradeskill tutorial leads you from level one to nine with a minimal number of combines.

Tutorial: Forging Ahead is the first required quest in the sequence. Your delegate will give you one coal and a copy of Artisan Essentials Volume 1 which contains the candelabra recipe that you need to create.

Presuming you are at full vitality and gaining double experience for every combine, creating a pristine simple candelabra will give you 19% of level 2.

The quest will give you the remaining 81% of level 2 and 99.9% of level 3. As you can see, the tutorial makes for incredibly fast leveling. You will also get your initial recipe books for free rather than have to purchase them from a Crafting Trainer.

The remaining quests follow the same sequence. Create one or two items and return to the delegate for experience and another recipe book which you should scribe immediately.

Tutorial: Forging Ahead
Simple Candelabra
Forge

Tutorial: Countering Problems

Tutorial: Essential Outfitting
Tin Chainmail Coat
Forge

Rawhide Leather Backpack
Sewing Table

The final quest in the series rewards the Artisan’s Tunic. This tunic offers +2 to stamina, agility and wisdom, +5 to health, +15 to power and +1 to each of the crafting skills.

You must be a level 5 Artisan to wear it.

Choosing a Profession

Speak to a crafting trainer to choose your specialization as soon as you receive level 9. If you have not completed the tutorial, speak to the trainer first (who will effectively give you a free level) and then carry on with the tutorial to gain experience in level ten. Any experience put into level 9 is wasted.

In addition, you will not be able to progress beyond level 9 until you choose a profession (Craftsman, Outfitter or Scholar). Once you speak to the trainer, you will receive level 10 in the profession of your choice.
