Legends of Norrath is Sony’s Trading Card Game which can be accessed from within Everquest and Everquest 2. Many people quite enjoy playing Legends of Norrath for fun and in tournaments but I’m not a huge fan of TCGs. However, as an EQ2 player, I log into LON every month for the free loot cards.

You don’t have to buy decks for a chance to receive a loot card – active subscribers are given free, non-tradeable booster packs on a regular basis. You can open these packs and browse through the cards directly through Everquest 2.

Obviously the majority of cards are focused on the card game but the booster packs can also include loot cards. These cards aren’t used in Legends of Norrath but instead award in-game items for Everquest and Everquest 2 which can’t be received any other way.

This is a step-by-step guide to checking your free card packs and claiming your in-game loot items in Everquest 2.

If at any point the instructions are not clear, you can click on the thumbnail to see an example with yellow highlights.

Enter the Legends of Norrath application

Within Everquest 2, you can either type /lon or find the menu option through the EQII directory

Choose to Enter the game

You can try the tutorial another time but right now, we just want to jump in and look at the cards.

Clear / Close the various windows

You’ll initially have a number of pop-up windows informing you of the current promotion and Booster packs that you have received. Close them until you only have one layer left.

Collection

At the main Legends of Norrath screen, select the “Collection” option in the bottom row, which allows you to open packs and view cards.

The Collection Manager is the equivalent of a binder where you keep your trading cards. You may be asked whether you want to claim in-game loot within Everquest or Everquest 2. Unless you play Everquest and are considering claiming the loot for use in that game, you can safely tick the “Don’t show loot card info” box. You will still see the loot cards, it will simply stop asking you which game you want to redeem them in.

Using the “Jump to” menu, select Packs

This will show you your your unopened booster packs. If you do not have any, this page of your binder will be empty.

Double-click on a booster pack

You can see the total quantity of packs available per type. You need to double-click each one in order to open it. You may get asked again which game you wish to claim your loot cards in. If you always want to claim them in Everquest 2, just tick “Don’t show loot card info” and this time it should work and you really won’t get asked again.

Right-Click to Open Multiple Packs

I think this takes the fun out of it but you can speed things up by opening your packs in groups of up to 5 packs at a time.

Scan through the cards

Actually, you don’t need to do this, all loot cards will get dropped onto the appropriate page in your Collection Manager. But it’s more fun to scroll through and see what you received.

Jump for joy if you see a loot card

You can recognise the loot cards quickly as you go through the booster pack because they have a yellow title and border.

Use the “Jump to” menu to check the Redeemable Items page

After you open all of your available booster packs, the binder will automatically take you to this page if you have items to redeem.

Double-click on the Loot Card

You’ll get a pop-up redemption window including a full description of the item.

Redeem the item

This makes the item available to your characters in Everquest II. Note the items are not tradeable but they are Heirloom and can be claimed by any character on the account via the EQ2 /claim interface, regardless of which character was logged in when you redeemed it in LON.

Exit Legends of Norrath

Press the big X and return to Everquest II.

Type /claim

To claim your new loot item, you need to leave the LON interface and return to EQ2. The items are marked as Heirloom so you can use the shared bank to hand it to the correct character if you have claimed on the wrong one. The /claim brings up the Claim Items window and you can claim your loot. There is a tab specifically for Legends of Norrath items.

That’s it. If you are especially lucky, you might receive a Mysterious Key from a Travelers Booster Pack. This key will unlock a unique, level 80, heroic instance only available to the holder of a key and his group. You can see all the Travelers EQ2 loot rewards at the Legends of Norrath site as well as information about all the previous decks.

West of the Spires in Enchanted Lands

Nerian Highlands in Darklight Wood

In front of the Nursery in Greater Faydark

The mushroom rings lead to small, temporary instances which scale to your level. When you enter the instance you will find an NPC offering a simple quest. Completing the quest rewards you with an elemental token. Each instance has a merchant which has house items and appearance items for sale. The elemental tokens can be used to purchase these items (listed below) You can collect up to six tokens per month (there are two quests in the Darklight Woods instance) per character. The tokens are heirloom so you can trade them between characters on a single account.

These instances also include special purple shiny collections. There is only a single question mark in an instance, so it may take some months to complete these collections.

The intention, once all the gremlins are shaken out, is that it will run from 12:01 am on the 20th till 11:59pm on the 21st (48 hours in total).

However, as we saw this morning, not all the gremlins are quite shaken out yet, so please keep that in mind as the goal we are working towards, not a hard-and-fast promise written in blood and the tears of small kittens.

I’ve already filled a shelf in our guild hall with books for everyone: an address book for our guild members, a copy of Harvesting by Tier, collection references and a few short stories set in Norrath. Writing your own bestseller is easy: you simply need to choose a design and then fill the pages with your prose.

There are two book recipes per tier, one handcrafted book using the standard pelt and one mastercrafted book using the rare pelt of that tier. The mastercrafted books have a clasped design.

These books are crafted by sages with level 50 or higher. Sages learn these recipes via a quest on the Isle of Mara. You will need to have basic Far Seas Trader faction to do the quest. You can gain this needed by speaking to Captain Ingrid at the docks and completing her initial quest.

Books come in two orientations which alternate up the tiers. Tier 1, tier 3 and the rest of the odd-numbered tiers sit flat while tier 2, tier 4 and the other even-numbered tiers stand upright.

Once you have chosen a book, you need to have it in your inventory in order to begin writing. A blank book can be edited by anyone. Once the book has an author (that is, it has been given a title) only the author can edit it.

Right-click on the book in your inventory, choose the read option and then press the edit button on the bottom bar.

Each book takes a limited amount of characters which comes out to approximately ten pages of text. As you edit, you will see a progress bar that shows how much of the book has been filled to help you keep track of the space remaining to you.

Once you assign a title to a book, you can save it, even if it has no text in it. The book will then show with title and your name as the author and only you will be able to edit the book from that point. You do not have to have the book in your inventory to edit it once you have set yourself as the author of the book.

You can write a book in any language that your character is fluent in. There is a drop-down menu in the lower-right area of the book editing window. Other characters who are not fluent in the language chosen will be able to read the title of your book, as it appears in common, however they will not be able to read the content.

To create a copy of a book, you need to have the original book and a blank book in your inventory. With your inventory open, right click the original book and choose the “Copy” option and then click on the blank book that you wish to copy the content into.

To find books on the broker, you will need to use the advanced filter as books do not display in the standard broker lists. Choose the item type “Player Written Book” and you will receive a list which you can sort by title, vendor or price. If you include the word by in the Item Name field, your search will be limited to those books with content.

And if you’d like an autographed copy of any of my books, just send an in-game email to Blackburrow.Taymar and let me know. If you’ll supply a blank book, I’m happy to come to your server and fill it.

Game Update 52, Might and Magic, has come to Norrath. Kiara has posted the Game Update Notes which offer plenty of detail. Before you disappear into the depths of Kunark to explore the new quest lines, however, you should pop by your home village to find out about getting upgrades to your abilities from the new Research Assistant you will find there.

Research Assistants have come to Norrath to help adventurers upgrade their abilities. When you interact with a Research Assistant, he or she will offer you a list of the spells and combat arts which can be upgraded, along with a timeline of how long it will take to research the upgrade.

The upgrades available to you are based on the spell or combat art you already have in your knowledge book. You must have purchased the crafted version of the spell or combat art in order to upgrade to the next version. The versions you can obtain from the Research Assistant are in bold.

Previously Known As

Current Version Name

Apprentice I

Apprentice

Apprentice IV

Journeyman

Adept I

Adept

Adept III

Expert

Master I

Master

Master II

Grandmaster

The researcher can only upgrade to Adept and Master so you must have purchased and scribed the crafted version (Journeyman and Expert, respectively) in order to get an upgrade. That is, if you have the Apprentice spell (which you receive automatically when you level), you will not be able to upgrade it. If you have scribed the Journeyman version of the spell (previously Apprentice IV), the Research Assistant will offer to to upgrade it to Adept. If you have the Expert level (previously known as Adept III) you will be offered to upgrade to the Master version. You cannot upgrade to crafted versions. If you want to upgrade from Adept, you will need to purchase the Expert version from a crafter, scribe it, and then the Research Assistant will offer to upgrade it to Master.

You can upgrade one spell or combat art at a time per account (not per character). If another character on the same account attempts to upgrade a spell, you will receive a warning that this will cancel the research for the other character.

If you cancel research on an upgrade, you will be able to transfer 1/3 of the time spent to a different upgrade. It is unclear if this works across characters on the same account.

If you receive the combat art or spell that you are researching as a drop, do not scribe it until you have been to the research assistant to change the research. If you change the research, then you will receive a third of the time spent as a credit. If you scribe the upgrade being researched, the game cancels the research and you do not receive the credit. (Source)

The time required to research the item is based on the level of the spell or combat art. Low level skills upgrade much quicker as you spend much less time using that spell before moving on to the next tier.

Research Assistants have been placed in all of the starting villages. The guards will show you the direct route if you ask them for the location of Research Assistant.

Choose a spell or combat art to be upgraded and you will see a progress meter at the top of the window for that research item. You can change to another spell and some of the time already spent progressing the research item you chose will be transferred to the new one. Only one character per account can upgrade a spell at a time.

When the spell research is complete, the Research Assistant will send you an in-game mail to let you know. Visit the Research Assistant once you’ve received your notification and he or she will update the spell or combat art directly into your knowledge book.

Many people use macros to add a line of text to each cast – a most annoying use of the system, if you ask me! But far fewer seem to take advantage of the ability to cast effects or to set up systems for situational spells.

We already have a whole set of guides for using macros for everything from swapping from solo to group gear to creating a quick mute button but as things can be hard to find (the gnomes are working on a new navigation system) I thought I would take the chance to highlight the posts in a single reference guide.

The /use_equipped_item is a very useful command because it enables you to to equip and then use an item in a macro. The “Use Item” macro step fails in this instance as it does not recognise that you’ve equipped the item. However, you can add a Command step and use the command line prompt in order to use the items immediately as they’ve been equipped, in the same macro. For an insta-cast item, this means that you can equip the item, cast it and then equip the original piece in a single macro. For non-insta-cast items, you can only do the first two steps, else the cast will be interrupted by the re-equipping. However, it is still useful to quickly equip and cast an item using macros rather than searching for the item in your inventory. See the post on Equipment Macros for more details.

Each player has 24 equipment slots, each with an assigned number. You can use these numbers in conjunction with the following commands:

/use_equipped_item #
/inventory unequip #

The EQ2 housing guide is here! Sixes has applied his gnomish magic once again: the guide is sortable by column so you can find exactly what you are looking for. If you want to get really clever, click on cost and then on location and watch the table re-sort itself to show you the best bargains per city.

This is a great source of information for making sure you are getting the number of rooms you expect and paying a decent price for the neighborhood.

Click straight through to Housing Locations to see the table in all its glory. :)

If you think this is useful, you should subscribe to our daily update by email to make sure you see Sixes’ next project. Gnomes are great, everyone should have one.
